Working with recycled materials, Ghanaian artisan Akwele Suma makes a statement for ecological preservation. She chooses strips of poster and magazine paper in tones of red, white, and orange, forming them into chain-like shapes that dangle from brass hooks. She names the earrings Nkonson, meaning 'chain' in the Akan language.
The artist uses the paper at hand so paper colors will vary, making each design a unique example of handcrafted art. These beads receive a protective coat of clear nail polish.
