Jo Percussivo

A self-taught artisan, Joseildo learned the art of crafting musical instruments by himself. He was born in Pernambuco in northeastern Brazil where he designs and creates his musical instruments. "I learned through a lot of research and hands-on practice ? 'with my hands in the dough,' as we say here in the northeast. "Starting out in this art was difficult. I didn't have many resources and needed a lot of strength and willpower to believe in my dream. I was tired, but it was worthwhile. "I'm a musician and I felt the need to craft my own instruments. "The passion and involvement with crafting my instruments left me no time to play with groups. Now my connection with music is through their creation. "Besides my craft, I teach this art to my main collaborators and partners ? my family. My sister Joseilda, my stepson Anderson and nephew Artur all work together, in all of the stages of the crafting process. "All of us do a bit of everything, from the design, elaboration, and quality control to the finalization and commercialization of our instruments. "I also supplied instruments to the Maracatu workshops through the More Culture program in federal government schools. Maracatu is a manifestation of folkloric dance to the sound of drums, rattles and cowbells that originated here in Pernambuco. "This art transforms me every day. It feeds my soul. "My inspiration comes from nature, from the different sounds in each of its manifestations. "I'm an optimistic person. I look for happiness, the pleasure of singing and I live life like this, with lightness. "I make it part of my life project to battle in order to grow, to expand my workshop, to creating a 'school' of youth with a formation in this art. I want them to value and preserve our culture and I plan to offer new opportunities and a better future for young people here."
