'Guatemala is home to more than 720 species of birds, and yet few people are concerned with preserving their natural habitat. This wall sculpture is my way of showcasing some of those birds, as well as to pledge the respect I have for nature,' says the talented Jose Arriola. Working with terracotta he crafts 20 colorful birds: two hummingbirds, a black toucan and a green toucan, four macaws, three parakeets, two peacocks, an oriole, a harlequin woodpecker, a yellow-breasted sparrow, a horned guan, and three surucua. These last ones are on the endangered species list. Painted with vivid realism, the birds are perched on a forged iron tree designed to hang on the wall.
The birds hang from the branches with galvanized iron hooks which allow them to be displayed as desired.
Though size, motifs and color may vary slightly due to their hand crafted nature, the types of birds remain the same.
